Prosecutors have not filed formal charges against Kerrie Lenkerd, 40, who is free after posting $5,000 bond.

Lenkerd told Centerton police on April 17 she saw the teen assaulting her neighbor's dog, according to the affidavit. Lenkerd said she retrieved her gun from her safe and confronted the boy.

She said the teen ran away, and she fired her gun into the grass to scare him, according to court documents. She then called police and retrieved an iPad the 14-year-old left as proof she had seen him.

Police officers found a spent shell casing where Lenkerd said she fired her gun, and they seized a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun.

Lenkerd was ordered not to have any contact with the teen and not to possess any firearms.

"A person should always use extreme care and use a lot of discretion when a firearm is involved," said Bentonville attorney Shane Wilkinson, who represents Lenkerd.

Wilkinson said his client used discretion when she used a firearm to stop her neighbor's dog from being abused by the same person for a second time.

Lenkerd's arraignment is scheduled for 8 a.m. June 5 in Circuit Judge Robin Green's courtroom.
