A SPIRITED PICNIC

Cemetery fundraiser puts $20,000 in chest

For the 13th year, supporters of the Mount Holly Cemetery Association picnicked among the historic tombstones for the association's spring fundraiser, R.I.P. Restore in Perpetuity.

The evening began with a welcome by association president Sybil Hampton, then drinks and appetizers as guests bid on silent auction items including a dinner for 10 at the Sexton's Cottage and a silk quilt incorporating images from Mount Holly. Lark in the Morning with Starr Mitchell and George West provided music, and there were tours led by Parkview Arts and Science High School students Annaleise Anderson and Dalton Carroll.

Guests enjoyed boxed suppers of fried chicken, fruit salad and pimento cheese sandwiches. Afterward, Sabrina Diamond, Anna Diaz and Claire Weber, Parkview students dressed in period costumes, reprised scenes from last fall's Tales of the Crypt. Stephanie Smittle, accompanied by guitarist Wythe Walker, performed the song "Mount Holly."

About 140 attended the picnic and helped raise $20,000. Funds will go toward maintaining the historic cemetery.
