Forestry Council

honors work

The Arkansas Urban Forestry Council honored six for outstanding work in planting and managing trees in their communities, as well as encouraging others to do likewise. The awards ceremony was held on the grounds of the governor's mansion in Little Rock. Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Joe Fox, a state forester, presented the awards. A pecan tree was planted there in honor of Arbor Day.

The honorees included Derden Landscape and Irrigation, 2016 outstanding business of the year; Carroll Electric Cooperative Corp., 2016 outstanding business of the year; Beautify Fort Smith, 2016 outstanding organization of the year; Richard Stafford of Whitlow Engineering, 2016 outstanding professional of the year; and Lynne Thompson and Frieda Schroder, 2016 outstanding volunteer.

Eagle Scout

Luke Monk of Fort Smith, 13, has attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He installed a flagpole and a patio for Central Presbyterian Church in Fort Smith, where his troop meets. Monk is a member of Troop 110 in Fort Smith and the son of Chris and Luciana and Chris Monk.

Van Slooten earns

Eagle Scout rank

Andrew Van Slooten of Bentonville, 16, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He organized 35 volunteers to paint the dining hall and one of the family sleeping rooms for the Salvation Army emergency shelter in Bentonville. They also installed new furniturem beddinga and decor for the family room. Van Slooten is a member of Troop 661 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the son Jennifer and Paul Van Slooten.

UA pianist

plays London

Argentinian pianist and University of Arkansas student Uriel Pascucci made his London debut performance during a concert at Royal Albert Hall on April 10. Passucci's performance was the result of winning second prize in the International Music Competition grand prize virtuoso 2017. Pascucci, who recently studied under concert pianist and University of Arkansas piano professor Jura Margulis, was awarded the prize based on his interpretation of Beethoven's Piano Sonata Op. 2 No. 3 in C Major.
