Society plans

Jupiter viewing

The Sugar Creek Astronomical Society and Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area will host a lecture and viewing of Jupiter in retrograde motion beginning at 7:45 p.m. Saturday at the park at Arkansas 12 and War Eagle Road.

“Perfectly positioned for observing all month, very bright Jupiter moves retrograde through the body of the constellation Virgo in the southern evening sky,” explained Katherine Auld, society president. “Retrograde motion happens because Earth, on its shorter race track path around the sun, is passing Jupiter on its longer track, and making Jupiter appear to move backwards against the backdrop of stars.”

The event is free and open to all ages. Items to bring include a flashlight (covered with a red cloth or balloon), binoculars, water bottle, and a folding chair.
