News in brief

USA Truck quarterly profit first since '15

USA Truck on Thursday reported a quarterly profit for the first time since 2015, but the company continues to lose money from its trucking segment.

The Van Buren-based company released its earnings report for the period ending Sept. 30 after markets closed, showing a net income of $409,000, up from a net loss of $734,000 during the same period last year.

Earnings per share for the third quarter were 5 cents, a year-over-year improvement from a loss of 9 cents a share.

Revenue rose to $114.2 million from $105.4 million a year ago.

The trucking segment of its business remains a drag on USA Truck's overall net income. It lost about $1.1 million this quarter, compared with a $1.5 million loss during third-quarter 2016.

Executives will host a conference call this morning to update shareholders on the company's finances.
