Burglary suspect fatally shot by 81-year-old Arkansas man

A burglary suspect was fatally shot by an 81-year-old homeowner Thursday in Genoa, according to the Miller County sheriff's office.

The shooting victim, who has not been identified, died at a Texarkana, Texas, hospital, according to Chief Deputy Michael McQuerrey of the Miller County sheriff's office. The body will be sent to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock to determine cause of death and for identification, McQuerrey said.

The homeowner, who identified himself as Buddy Cates, was not injured.

The shooting happened about 1:30 p.m. at a home at Arkansas 196 and Miller County Road 290.

Multiple shots were fired, according to investigators.

Authorities are still investigating and have not determined whether criminal charges will be filed, McQuerrey said.
