Pedestrian, driver die in big rig wrecks

At least two people died in separate accidents on Arkansas roads since Wednesday.

A 46-year-old man was killed early Thursday after the 18-wheeler he was driving crashed into trees and rolled off Interstate 30 in Arkansas, state police said.

About 4 a.m., Richard Wheeler Jr. of Sparta, Mich., was driving west on the road in a 2013 Freightliner, according to a preliminary crash report.

The truck reportedly left the road near the the town of Friendship in Hot Spring County, striking trees and rolling over on its side before coming to a rest.

Conditions were said to be clear and dry at the time of the wreck.

A 25-year-old Arkansas woman was struck by a tractor-trailer and killed Wednesday night, state police said.

According to a preliminary crash report, a 2017 Freightliner was headed south on U.S. 167 north of Batesville in Independence County when Phenelopy Granger "walked into" the vehicle shortly after 7:30 p.m.

Authorities said the Batesville resident was hit by the Freightliner's trailer and died. No other injuries were reported.

Conditions at the time of the crash were said to be clear and dry.
