Little Rock school enrollment to start; 2-week window begins Monday for new, transfer students

The Little Rock School District's open-enrollment period for the 2018-19 school year begins Monday and will go through Dec. 15 for students who will be new to the district, including pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children, and for transfer students from other districts and schools.

Open-enrollment registration will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on business days at the district's Student Registration Office, 501 Sherman St., at the corner of Sherman and East Capitol Avenue, across the street from the U.S. post office on East Capitol Avenue.

Additionally, students who seek to enroll in magnet or specialty schools should submit applications for those programs during the open-enrollment period, also at the Student Registration Office.

The magnet and specialty schools are Booker Arts, Carver Basic Skills/Math-Science, Gibbs Foreign Language/International Studies and Williams Traditional Studies elementary schools; Horace Mann Math and Science and Dunbar Gifted and Talented/International Studies middle schools, and Parkview Arts and Sciences Magnet High School and the international studies magnet program at Central High. Additionally there is the Forest Heights STEM Academy for kindergarten through eighth grade.

The following information is necessary to register a first-time student in the district:

• Child's official birth certificate, passport, military ID card or other documentation provided by law.

• Child's Social Security card or number.

• Two current proofs of residence, such as a lease agreement or current utility bill that is in the parent's or legal guardian's name that was issued within the past 30 days or personal property tax bill. Cellphone bills are not acceptable.

• Child's immunization records, which must be provided to the school after the child's school assignment is made.

Current 2017-18 school year students in the Little Rock School District will be automatically enrolled in their attendance zone schools, requiring no action on the part of families during the December open-enrollment period. Children currently enrolled in the district's pre-kindergarten program similarly will be automatically enrolled in kindergarten in their attendance zones.

Families of current students who have changed addresses are asked to provide proof of their current addresses at this time to ease the process of assigning student to schools in the new school year. That proof can be taken to the district's Student Registration Office. A parent giving notice now of a change in address will not affect this year's school assignment.

There is a different registration location for 3- and 4-year-olds who are seeking 2018-19 enrollment in the district's pre-kindergarten program.

Pre-kindergarten registration for all school sites will be from 8:30 to 5:30 p.m. daily at the Geyer Springs Early Childhood Center, 5420 Mabelvale Pike. Children must be 3 or 4 on or before Aug. 1, 2018, to be eligible for the free pre-kindergarten program.

For the pre-kindergarten program, current proof of income is required, such as paycheck stubs, tax records or food stamp benefit documents for all parents/guardians living in the household.

Spanish interpreters and free notary services will be on site.

More information about the district's early childhood program is available by calling 447-7360.

More information about registration in general is on the district's website: lrsd.org.
