House will become a home with Habitat's fundraising

Outdated furniture and used building materials were crafted into original, more functional pieces and auctioned off at ReStore and After, a Sept. 21 fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of Central Arkansas. The event -- hosted by Habitat's young professionals group -- raised $100,000, enough to build an entire house, said marketing director Becky Pittman.

Arkansas artists and do-it-yourselfers were invited to create works with their finds from Habitat ReStores, which sell used building materials, furniture and other used household goods. Some of the participating artists were Wes McHan, Nancy Dunaway, Annabelle Rector, Susan Plunkett and Vonda Rainey.

About 550 guests enjoyed buffets, a s'mores bar, drinks and music. There was also an auction that included trips, a custom suit from Paul Rainwater, a painting created on-site by Bob Snyder, a day at Oaklawn Racing with Craig O'Neill and a private flight around central Arkansas.

Retired Arkansas Supreme Court Justice Paul Danielson presented the family of the late retired Associate Justice Donald J. Corbin with a plaque to honor his life of service. All of the money raised at the event will pay for a house to be built in Corbin's honor, Pittman said. Corbin's daughter, Jennifer Corbin, was the event chairman, and the main sponsor was the Bank of the Ozarks.
