Police: Truck hits vehicle on I-30 in Arkansas, killing 2

A man and a woman from Texas were killed early Saturday after a truck hit their vehicle on Interstate 30 in Clark County, authorities said.

Arkansas State Police said Morgan Lawrence, 53, of Flint, Texas was driving a 2015 Volkswagen east on the highway around 12:15 a.m. when the vehicle was struck by an eastbound 2009 Freightliner truck. It happened near the 61 mile marker, which is about 12 miles south of Arkadelphia.

According to a report, the Volkswagen and the truck both veered off the interstate after impact. Lawrence and a passenger in his vehicle, Gean Lawrence, also of Flint, suffered fatal injuries.

The truck driver, identified as 42-year-old Raad E. Hamdeh Abu of Chicago Ridge, Ill., was listed as hurt, though the report didn't detail the extent of his injuries.

Conditions at the time were said to be clear and dry.

The deaths were two of at least 374 reported in traffic crashes in Arkansas so far this year.
