News in brief

Wal-Mart will close

LR store next month

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will close the Neighborhood Market at 2510 Cantrell Road in Little Rock on Nov. 2.

Anne Hatfield, a spokesman for the Bentonville-based retailer, said the closing is isolated and comes as part of Wal-Mart's periodic standard review of its store portfolio.

"The decision to close the Cantrell Road Neighborhood Market is not an easy one, and is in no way, a reflection of the hard work and customer service provided by the leadership and associates at the store," Hatfield said in a statement.

The closing will affect about 100 employees, but Hatfield said they'll have opportunities to transfer to nearby stores.

The store's pharmacy will remain open until Nov. 2 as well, and customers will have the opportunity to transfer their prescriptions elsewhere. Prescriptions that haven't been transferred will automatically move to the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 2700 S. Shackleford Road.

USA Truck to offer driver scholarships

USA Truck will give scholarships to 15 students who enroll in the commercial driver's license training program run by the University of Arkansas Global Campus at Rogers, Springdale's Northwest Technical Institute and Malvern's Mid-America Truck Driving School.

A $4,250 enrollment fee, which the USA Truck scholarships will cover, gives students who want to become truck drivers access to in-class and behind-the-wheel training throughout the five-week program.

To be eligible for a commercial driver's license and the scholarship, according to a news release, participants must be at least 21 years old; have fewer than two moving violations and collisions in the past three years; have no convictions of driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated in the past seven years; and be able to pass a drug test.
