HELENA-WEST HELENA -- A Helena-West Helena man faces charges of manslaughter and child endangerment after police say he accidentally shot his 2-month-old daughter Friday evening while unloading a weapon.

Kevin Minniefield, 30, was arrested Friday evening, said Helena-West Helena Police Chief James Smith.

Smith said Minniefield was sitting on a couch in his Dinan Street home while unloading the weapon. The child's mother had just entered the house, carrying the 2-month-old in a car seat. The woman placed the car seat down near Minniefield when the gun accidentally went off, Smith said.

The child was struck in the head. Emergency personnel transported the baby to Helena Regional Medical Center and were preparing to fly her by medical helicopter to a Memphis hospital when she died, the chief said.
