After bomb squad called, no helium found in tank on Arkansas bridge

JUDSONIA -- Authorities determined that a helium tank found on a rural bridge had no helium in it, a White County sheriff's major said Tuesday.

Deputies found the tank Monday morning on a Conway Road bridge between Judsonia and Bald Knob, Sgt. Heather King said in a news release. The sheriff's office contacted the bomb squad of the Arkansas State Police, which rendered the device safe.

An investigation was underway, but Maj. Clayton Edwards said Tuesday that the device turned out to be "pretty harmless."

"There wasn't any helium in it," he said. Someone had put some fireworks accelerant in it, he said.

The bridge is not heavily traveled, Edwards said.
