One year ago today, crews detonated explosives to try and bring down the large steel arch of the old Broadway bridge connecting Little Rock and North Little Rock. And it didn't quite go according to plan.

After the smoke cleared, it became apparent the charges hadn't been powerful enough to collapse the structure into the Arkansas River below. Cables were later attached and the arch was pulled down by boats. Days later, more explosives were used on three concrete arches that had supported the northern half of the bridge. Two fell into the river, but a third stayed intact.

Despite the setbacks, the project continued as planned and the new Broadway bridge opened to traffic in March, weeks ahead of schedule.
