Head-on crash on bridge over Arkansas lake kills motorcyclist, injures driver

One person was killed and another injured Thursday in a head-on collision in a no-passing zone on a bridge over an Arkansas lake, authorities said.

It happened about 2:15 p.m. on the Arkansas 12 bridge over Beaver Lake east of Rogers in Benton County, Arkansas State Police said.

Rene S. Ayala, 29, of Rogers was riding a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle east when he moved into the westbound lanes to pass another vehicle, according to a crash report. The Suzuki then hit a westbound 2009 Nissan head-on.

Ayala suffered fatal injuries. The Nissan driver, identified by police as 47-year-old Rodney Robertson of Rogers, was listed as being hurt, though the report didn't detail the extent of his injuries.

Conditions at the time were said to be clear and dry.

Arkansas Department of Transportation records show the crash for a time closed all eastbound lanes, and they didn't completely reopen for more than six hours.

At least 411 people have died in crashes on Arkansas highways so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
