Hatley breaks open game as Arkadelphia romps

ARKADELPHIA 35, BAUXITE 0

BAUXITE -- Junior tailback Zion Hatley ran 20 times for 135 yards and 3 third-quarter touchdowns in Arkadelphia's 35-0 victory over Bauxite on a chilly Friday night at The Pit.

The Badgers (8-1, 5-1 7-4A) led 7-0 at halftime before breaking open the game behind Hatley, who scored on runs of 17, 4 and 15 yards during a 6 ½-minute span of the third quarter.

Arkadelphia's only loss this year -- 21-17 on Sept. 29 at conference leader Pulaski Robinson -- occurred when Hatley didn't play because of a concussion. Hatley, 6-0, 185 pounds, has rushed for more than 1,000 yards this fall.

"He's just special," Arkadelphia Coach J.R. Eldridge said. "Runs hard, and he's really fast. He's doing a great job."

Sophomore quarterback Cannon Turner added 114 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on 12 carries.

Arkadelphia applied the Arkansas Activities Association's sportsmanship rule after Turner ran 34 yards for a touchdown, and junior place-kicker Gabe Goodman added the extra point for a 35-0 lead with 7:36 remaining in the game.

Arkadelphia finished with a 368-130 advantage in total yardage and converted 2 third-quarter fumble recoveries into short touchdown drives (21 and 15 yards).

Arkadelphia led 28-0 after Hatley ran 15 yards for a touchdown with 1:44 remaining in the third quarter. The touchdown came one play after sophomore Jayson Campbell recovered a fumble covering a kickoff.

The Badgers ran for 330 yards on 37 attempts.

"Just a great team effort," Eldridge said. "Feel like our offense got going in the second half, as our defense and special teams continued to create opportunities for us."

Junior halfback Dawson Dabbs ran 17 times for 66 yards for Bauxite (4-5, 2-4), which didn't complete a pass in eight attempts.

Arkadelphia led 7-0 at halftime after scoring on the game's second play from scrimmage -- a 5-yard run by Turner with 11:37 remaining in the first quarter. Hatley had run 46 yards on the previous play.

Bauxite moved to the Arkadelphia 23 on its second possession of the game, but a 40-yard field-goal attempt was blocked by senior Dillion Scott with 4:31 remaining in the first quarter.
