City public service focus of meeting

Little Rock officials plan to sit down to chat Wednesday with community members who are interested in serving as citizen members on city boards or commissions.

The panel discussion will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Robinson Center at 426 W. Markham St.

City officials and current members of various boards and commissions will talk about opportunities and the benefits of serving, as well as the effects people can have on the community by participating. A networking reception will follow.

"Boards and commissions play a crucial role in city government," a news release said.

Events set to mark library milestones

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Main Library opening in the River Market District and the founding of the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, the Central Arkansas Library System is planning several events this month and next.

The first is a Legacies and Lunch program with a 20th anniversary film at noon Wednesday in the Ron Robinson Theater at 100 River Market Ave.

There are four other library events this month, and another two set for October so far. More information is available online at cals.org.

The Main Library opened Sept. 20, 1997. The Butler Center, a department of the library system, was founded that year as well. It is now housed in the Arkansas Studies Institute that opened in 2009.

The Main Library campus includes the Ron Robinson Theater, which opened in 2014, and the Cox Creative Center that opened in 2001.

September is also Library Card Sign-up Month. Central Arkansas residents can sign up for cards at any library branch or on the library system's website.

Volunteers sought for yearly cleanup

The group that plans the annual Little Rock Cleanup is seeking volunteers to clean Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Murray Park.

The cleanup will be on land and water. Anyone with watercraft suitable for the Arkansas River is encouraged to use it to clean along the riverbanks. Others will clean up in the park and along the trails.

Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toed shoes and take gloves, a reusable water bottle and litter grabbers. Trash bags and some disposable gloves will be available.
