Bikers

The Northwest Chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse will meet at 1:30 p.m. today in the conference center at Cabela's Retail Store, 2300 Promenade Blvd. in Rogers. All chapter meetings are open to the public, and anyone interested in the organization is invited. All members and supporters must clear an N.C.I.C. background check. Guests are welcome to come early and visit with members before the meeting.

Woodcarvers

The Woodcarvers of Northwest Arkansas will hold their monthly meeting from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the Foxfire building at 37th and Walnut streets, behind Bryan College in Rogers. The 38th annual woodcarving show, to be held Sept. 16 and 17 at the Frisco Mall, will be discussed.

New members are always welcome to learn the many styles of woodcarving. The group meets from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Tuesday and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Historians

The public is invited to join the Benton County Historical Society at 2:30 p.m.today for a tour of the Glade Post Office and Coal Gap School. From U.S. 62 in Garfield, turn right (south) on Arkansas 127, go about five miles, then turn right on Slate Gap Road (County Road 93). Stay on that road for another five miles, and Glade Post Office and Coal Gap School are across the road from each other on the right.

D.A.R.

The James Bright Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet at 1 p.m. today at the Old Train Station at 412 S. Main St. in Bentonville. Debra Lewis will present a program about the U.S. Constitution in observance of Constitution Week. Plans are being made to present copies of The Constitution to elementary school students.

Audubon

The Northwest Audubon Society will host a field trip to Hobbs State Park beginning at 9 a.m. today. The hike will include the Sinking Stream and Historic Van Winkle trails.

Little Clifty Creek and associated springs connect these short ½ mile-long trails. "The area is full of native birds and interesting native plants," according to Joe Neal, hike leader. "Spotted jewelweed, for example, is quite attractive to migrating ruby-throated hummingbirds." Other interesting plants include Pawpaw, Great Blue Lobelia, Yellow Ironweed, White Crown beard, an Agrimony, white Leaf cup, and Yellow Bear's foot.

"Both walks are easy and often birdy," he says. "Historic Van Winkle Trail is barrier-free. As on all Northwest Arkansas Audubon Society field trips, participate as much or as little as you want. The field trip is free and open to the public."

Newcomers

The Fayetteville Newcomers Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2925 N. Old Missouri Road in Fayetteville, for coffee, refreshments and the monthly program, which features Fayetteville Animal Services. The guest speaker will be Justin Lentz, Animal Services superintendent.

Newcomers to the area, as well as established residents, are invited to attend.

Legion 341

Bella Vista American Legion Post 341 members will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Post Hall, 1889 Bella Vista Way in Bella Vista.

In addition to meetings, the post hosts Coffee With the Commander for members on the first and third Saturdays of each month. On the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, a breakfast buffet is available to members and the public.

Lunches at the post are served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday each week. These lunches are open to members and the public.

Additionally, the post hosts a very well received Taco Tuesday each week followed by a Fish Friday. Wednesday nights are devoted to trivia contests for members and the public, with Thursday nights karaoke. For those desiring meals on these days, the restaurant features a casual-themed menu.

Saturday evenings are dance nights open to the public starting at 7 p.m. These evenings feature local musical groups. Food on Saturdays is limited to hamburgers and accompaniments available from 4 to 7 p.m. Finally, the meeting hall is open to the public for rental on an as available basis.

Ko-ko-ci

The Ko-ko-ci Chapter of the Arkansas Archeological Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Arkansas Archeological Survey building, 2475 N. Hatch Ave. in Fayetteville. Guest speaker will be Mary Beth Trubitt, who will present "WPA Excavations at the Adair Mound Center." The meeting is free and open to the public.

Antique Autos

Foothills of the Ozarks Antique Auto Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Parsons Stadium in Springdale. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish, and the club will furnish the meat. Bring own drinks, plates and silverware, plus a serving spoon for your covered dish. Also bring own chairs. The meal will begin at 6 p.m. Club dues of $10 per person are due now.

This supportive and educational group is for patients, caregivers, families and friends coping with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, MDS or other blood cancers. The group meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale.

Union Vets

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Foghorns Restaurant, 2221 W. Walnut St. in Rogers. Dinner will be at 6 p.m.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is a fraternal organization honoring the heritage of those who fought for the United States during the Civil War. The meeting is open to everyone.

AAUW

The American Association of University Women, Fayetteville Branch, will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Fayetteville Underground gallery for a presentation about current events and topics in Arkansas and United States healthcare news. Networking time begins at 5:30 p.m. with light refreshments. Opportunities to ask questions and to dialogue will follow the presentation. AAUW members, guests and the public are invited. Admission is free.

The speakers will be local couple and philanthropists, Dr. Hershey and Denise Garner, both of whom are very active in many causes and organizations. Hershey Garner has specialized as a radiation oncologist in Northwest Arkansas for over 20 years, and Denise has been a nurse practitioner specializing in head and neck oncology.

AAUW membership is open to anyone holding an associate's (or equivalent, e.g. RN), bachelor's or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

The Iota Alpha Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi, will meet Wednesday at the home of Jan Thurman. The service project for September is a monetary donation to the Boys and Girls Club. The social activity of the month is the Fall Bella Vista Chapter Gathering at United Lutheran Church on Sept. 29.

Historians

The Bella Vista History Club will hold its first meeting at the Bella Vista Historical Museum at 7 p.m. Thursday. Jill Werner will present "A Taste of Old Bella Vista," which covers the historical cuisine of the community from Indian times up until the first fast food restaurant was built. Light refreshments will be served, as well as a sample tasting of a vintage recipe. The History Club will continue to meet the second Thursday of each month with the exception of October, due to the annual open house.

There will be no dues, officers or rules, just fun for the whole family.

Pastel Society

The Ozark Pastel Society will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in John Brown University's art department. The program will be a double demo in pastel and oil by Charles Peer and Peter Pohle of a still life.

Orchid Society

The Orchid Society of the Ozarks' annual Orchid Auction will begin at 1 p.m. Sept. 17 at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. The preview starts at noon.

Hundreds of exotic plants from around the world will be available for bidding. Anyone interested in growing orchids is welcome to attend. The objective of the society is to stimulate interest in orchids and their culture. Monthly raffles for members and occasional public auctions offer affordable orchids and supplies for new and experienced growers.
