Sheriff: Male dies in custody after 'very intense' fight with Arkansas deputies

Arkansas authorities say a man died in custody after an altercation with a group of sheriff’s deputies Saturday night.

According to a news release from the Cleburne County sheriff’s office, an ambulance was making a medical call at 502 W. Heber Springs Rd. in Heber Springs, when a male in the area began “acting disorderly.”

Cleburne County deputies attempted to talk to the male, who they said began to fight them.

After a “very intense physical altercation," the deputies took the male into custody and discovered he was in medical distress, according the release.

Some deputies reportedly began CPR while another ran to the ambulance for help. The male was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

As of Sunday morning, the male’s name had not been released.

The deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by Arkansas State Police.
