Expiration date

Harrison, Ark., and the roads to it, and the lakes around it, and the rivers that run through it, may be the closest thing to heaven you'll find on this earth. We still remember one rural hilltop featuring a lone apple tree outside town somewhere. On a drive to Missouri years ago, we had to pull over just to look and absorb that autumn scene. It's a picture in our minds that we'll take on to the next world.

But Harrison, Ark., hasn't been all beautiful over the years. More than 100 years ago, race riots drove most black people away, and unfortunately some kluxers and other usual suspects moved in to claim Harrison as their own. Somebody made national news a few years ago when they put up some billboards with nasty messages. And those billboards have stood till recently.

The person who's been paying rent for a sign that said "Diversity is a code word for white genocide" apparently didn't get the message that he also has to pay the state a renewal fee every two years for that sign. Seems he missed a payment, and the signs are to come down on that technicality. And cheers went up around Harrison and the rest of the state. (Sometimes technicalities are a blessing.)

Come, let us reason together. And treat others as we'd like to be treated. Isn't there a Book that suggests both?
