Police: Truck driver fights back with machete when man tries to rob him in North Little Rock

A truck driver who had been sleeping in his tractor-trailer used a machete to fight off a robber after the assailant awakened him and threatened him with a tire iron early Wednesday, police said.

The victim, a 57-year-old man from Atlanta, told officers he was asleep in his truck parked at the 11000 block of Barton Road in North Little Rock when he heard the door unlock and open slightly after 1 a.m. Then a man armed with a tire iron climbed into the truck's cab and demanded the driver's wallet, according to a North Little Rock Police Department report.

The victim said he grabbed his machete and swung at the attacker, causing him to drop the tire iron, according to the report.

The attacker and a woman who was seen standing near the door reportedly fled east on Barton Road after the struggle.

The victim told police he believed he cut himself with his own machete, then noticed his log book containing his permit and registration was missing. He said the attacker or the woman may have taken it because it looked like a wallet, according to the report.

The victim said the suspect was not injured during the struggle, but he left behind the black tire iron along with an earring stud and a red-and-blue hat.

Police haven't named any suspects, and no arrests had been made at the time of the report.
