Blasting will halt traffic on U.S. 70

Rock-blasting operations will require 10-minute closings of a section of U.S. 70 in Garland County today, the Arkansas Department of Transportation said.

During the operations, traffic will be stopped once daily for 10 minutes between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. between Scenic Ridge and Summit Ridge roads, weather permitting.

Traffic on U.S. 70 will be stopped as a safety precaution, and flaggers will control traffic within the work zone, the department said. The agency said motorists should consider alternative routes, including U.S. 270.

The work is part of a $78.5 million project to widen a 17.5-mile section of U.S. 70 from Interstate 30 in Benton to U.S. 71B in Hot Springs to five lanes. It is largely a two-lane route now with some passing lanes.
