Organist at UCA
Revolutionary organist Cameron Carpenter and his International Touring Organ will be onstage, 7:30 p.m. today at Reynolds Performance Hall, University of Central Arkansas, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway. Carpenter usually announces the selections he's performing from the stage; his repertoire includes the complete organ works of J.S. Bach, film scores, his original compositions and hundreds of transcriptions and arrangements. Tickets are $30-$40, $10 for children, free for UCA students with valid student ID. 'Red-Headed Devil'
Deborah Skok, a history professor at Hendrix College, will discuss the contributions of Jane Hoey, a social worker and social welfare advocate who headed the Bureau of Public Assistance during the Depression, in a lecture titled "That Red-Headed Devil: Jane Hoey and Women's Leadership in the New Deal," 7:30 p.m. today in the Ottenheimer Auditorium, Historic Arkansas Museum, 200 E. Third St., Little Rock.
The lecture is part of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock University History Institute's Evenings with History series. Admission is by subscription to the University History Institute, free for visitors and UALR students. Refreshments will be served at 7. Call (501) 569-3235.

Jazz in the Park
Louis Heard & Co. will open the sixth season of Jazz in the Park, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the History Pavilion, just west of the First Security Amphitheater, in Little Rock's Riverfront Park (enter the park via Ottenheimer Drive off President Clinton Avenue).
Admission is free. In case of rain, the concert will move to the River Market West Pavilion, behind the Ottenheimer Market Hall, 400 President Clinton Ave. Beer, wine, soft drinks and water will be sold, along with new Jazz in the Park koozies; a portion of the proceeds benefits Art Porter Music Education Inc.'s scholarship fund. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome, and there is some seating in the natural stone amphitheater at the History Pavilion. No coolers are allowed.

Central Arkansas Library System is hosting a community reading event for Lies My Teacher Told Me by James W. Loewen, 6 p.m. Thursday, Cox Creative Center, 120 River Market Ave., Little Rock. Loewen's book explores the perpetuation of historical myths. The reading is part of the library system's ongoing Fake News series. Admission is free. Spence memorial
Author Denise White Parkinson is spearheading a memorial celebration of the life of famous Arkansas prisoner Helen Ruth Spence (1912-34) of St. Charles, Arkansas County, the subject of her book, Daughter of the White River, 10:30 am Thursday at the St. Charles Cemetery, 413 Third Street, Saint Charles.
Spence was buried in the cemetery's potter's field 84 years ago with a red cedar marking the head of her burial place. Her grave will receive a memorial foot stone courtesy of Arkansas philanthropist Dorothy Morris of the Morris Foundation.
Sponsors of the memorial include Integrity Funeral Home of Stuttgart, Moon Monument Co. of Pine Bluff and the Stuttgart High School EAST Lab program, which is filming the event for inclusion in a documentary film adaptation of Daughter of the White River.
A touring exhibit of works by Arkansas County photographer Dayton Bowers, including photographs of Helen Spence, remains on display through April 28 at Little Rock's Butler Center Gallery.
