• Joan Almond, a nutrition agent at a Louisiana State University Agriculture Center extension office, said the office received a box of new pens, pencils and highlighters along with a letter explaining that the sender stole office supplies while working there as a teenager more than 40 years ago and sent the box to make up for the theft.

• Ann Murphy, mayor of Mayo, Fla., said the town of 1,500 people is switching its name to Miracle Whip, though holding the Mayo is a temporary change that's part of a marketing proposal by the Kraft Heinz company, which will compensate the town up to $25,000 for city beautification.

• Adrian Hernandez Portillo, 35, a former federal police officer from Mexico, was convicted on charges of smuggling drugs in Alabama after authorities stopped a truck Portillo was driving and found 14 pounds of cocaine and more than a pound of morphine.

• Jean Prado, 63, says he was arrested in Miami after being mistaken for his twin brother, Raul Prado, who was serving a 25-year sentence in Augusta, Ga., for trafficking marijuana in 2007 until his escape in May from a work detail.

• H. Brooke Paige received the Vermont Republican Party's nominations for U.S. Senate, U.S. House, state treasurer, secretary of state, auditor of accounts and attorney general, then withdrew from all of the races except secretary of state.

• Corey Cohen, an Apple expert, restored an Apple-1 computer that is expected to sell for $300,000 at an auction in Boston because it is one of about 60 remaining computers of the original 200 designed and built by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976 and 1977.

• Leslie Ruiz, 12, was honored by the city of Meriden, Conn., for her bravery after police said she jumped on the back of an armed robber who was trying to steal cash out of the register at her family's convenience store.

• William Gilbert, 94, a World War II Navy veteran, after 72 years finally received his Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Silver Star and American Campaign Medal during a ceremony at a veterans hospital in Louisville, Ky., where he is a patient.

• George Walthall, 71, a disbarred attorney in Alabama, faces charges after authorities said he sought bail for a defendant and tried to collect payment for that legal work, though he had surrendered his law license in June.
