Enjoy a cup of coffee or juice and have a muffin with the birds. The Wildlife Society of the University of Arkansas will be catching song birds, handling them so the public can really see them and then releasing them back into the wild. Learn about how this type of research has taught us many things about birds.

The breakfast and activities are free from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday and April 14 at the conservation area visitor center at Hobs State Park. Registration is not required.

Free tax

aid set

With tax season under way, United Way of Northwest Arkansas is providing two free tax preparation and filing services that support local families. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is an in-person resource for individuals earning $54,000 or less. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation funds this Free Tax Service Initiative and CARE Community Center and WestARK RSVP provides the tax preparation and filing services.

The second free tax service is MyFreeTaxes.com, a free online tax service for individuals making $66,000 or less. This secure website can be used to file federal and state taxes in all 50 states and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Just like the in-person sites, this website will look for all the tax credits that someone might be eligible for to ensure families and individuals are maximizing their refunds. This service is sponsored by H&R Block

The average tax preparation costs over $200 compared to the free services of VITA and myfreetaxes.com. Last year over $6 million dollars was put back into the Northwest Arkansas community through the free tax services United Way of Northwest Arkansas provides

Stratigakos

to lecture

Despina Stratigakos will present a lecture at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall, on the University of Arkansas campus, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design lecture series.

Stratigakos is an architectural historian, author and professor in the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning. Her books explore the intersections of power and architecture, and she has published widely on issues of diversity in architecture.

In her lecture, titled "Hitler's Home Makeover: How Interior Design and Media Fluff Helped Sell a Dictator," Stratigakos will discuss how Adolf Hitler's inner circle refashioned his private persona in the mid-1930s, transforming him in the eyes of the world's media from oddball bachelor to country gentleman.

This is the 2018 Histories of Architecture and Design lecture. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free, with limited seating.

Blood Center

seeks donors

The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks has announced that area blood reserves are recovering following the Code Red Emergency Appeal. A combination of severe winter weather and a busier than normal flu season resulted in a severe drop in the donation levels at area blood drives earlier this month. The drop in donations prompted a rare Code Red Emergency Appeal for the CBCO service region. Many blood donors heard the message and gave blood to try to build blood reserves to safe levels. Although progress has been made, reserves are still at less than optimum levels. Healthy donors are strongly urged to give at a CBCO blood drive or donor center this week.

Help by giving blood at these upcoming blood drive:

•Berryville: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Mercy Hospital Berryville, 214 Carter St.

•Fayetteville: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Washington County Sheriff's Office, 1155 Clydesdale Drive

•Bella Vista: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Highlands United Methodist Church, 371 Glasgow Road
