• If state Welfare Commissioner Len E. Blaylock doesn't get that baby out of of the penitentiary, he might leave himself open to a charge of nonfeasance in office, a spokesman for the state Welfare Board said Monday night. The Board had ordered Blaylock last Friday to start legal proceedings to get the 2-month old child, the son of a woman inmate, into welfare custody. The warning statement Monday night came after only one business day had passed. Blaylock was not available for comment.

• U.S. District Judge Henry Woods said Friday he had followed guidelines in 1992 and stood by his sentencing of kidnapping suspect James Avery Slack to two years' probation rather than a prison term on a firearms possession charge. Woods made the comments after re-examining the 1992 case. "I'd do the same thing again," Woods said Friday of his April decision. "Any other judge here would, too, under similar circumstances." Slack pleaded innocent Thursday in the Monday kidnapping of Jo Ann Lieblong of Conway.

• The Little Rock bar where former Razorback Darren McFadden, 20, was involved in a fight last month was fined $500 Tuesday and put on probation by the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Division. Two managers and a doorman from Ernie Biggs, a piano bar in the downtown River Market District, admitted in letters to alcohol regulators that a bouncer let McFadden inside Jan. 9 knowing that he was not 21. State law prohibits private clubs that do not serve food from allowing those under 21 inside. A fight occurred inside the bar that night, and bouncer Brant Hankins was hit in the face as he tried to escort someone from McFadden's group outside, according to a Little Rock police report.
