Pakistan to release anti-U.S. militant

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A Pakistani court has ordered the release of a radical anti-U.S. cleric who went to Afghanistan with thousands of volunteers to help the Taliban fight Americans after the U.S.-led invasion in 2001, a defense lawyer said Tuesday.

The development comes as U.S.-Pakistani tensions rise since President Donald Trump accused Pakistan of harboring militants and the U.S. said it was withholding aid to Islamabad.

Sufi Mohammad was set free on health grounds and the paperwork for his release was still being processed Tuesday, his lawyer said.
