BASKETBALL

Hutchcraft records victory No. 2,000

MORRILTON — John Hutchcraft recorded his 2,000th coaching victory Tuesday night. The longtime Guy-Perkins coach reached the milestone when the Thunderbirds downed conference rival Sacred Heart 88-75. Hutchcraft, 64, has been at Guy-Perkins since 1978, and his boys and girls teams have won a combined 10 state titles. Hutchcraft is the only girls coach from Arkansas to have been a head coach at the McDonald’s All-American Game, which came in 2015. Hutchcraft said he plans to retire at the end of this season.

BASEBALL

Hogs ranked No. 4

The Arkansas Razorbacks were slotted at No. 4 in the D1Baseball.com preseason poll released Tuesday, marking the second top five ranking of 2018 for the Razorbacks.

Coach Dave Van Horn's club is coming off a 45-19 record, including an 18-11 finish in the SEC, which represented a 19-game improvement from 2016.

The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville opens the season Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. against Bucknell for the start of a three-game series.

The Razorbacks, who have played in NCAA regionals in 14 of the past 15 years, were ranked No. 3 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 6 by Perfect Game in previously released preseason polls.

GYMNASTICS

Shaffer wins SEC award

Arkansas Razorbacks gymnast Sarah Shaffer was named SEC co-Freshman of the Week after posting a 39.325 all-around score -- the fourth highest in the nation among freshmen -- in her second collegiate meet Friday against Kentucky. The Tyler, Texas, native posted scores of 9.875 on the vault, 9.85 on the floor exercise and 9.8s on the uneven bars and balance beam.

Shaffer, the sixth Arkansas gymnast to win SEC Freshman of the Week, shared the award with Kentucky's Ella Warren, who scored a 9.875 on the bars and a 9.8 on the floor at Barnhill Arena.

The No. 10 Razorbacks compete against No. 24 Missouri on Friday at 6:45 p.m. in Columbia, Mo.

Schultz receives freshman honor

Arkansas Razorbacks diver Brooke Schultz was named SEC female Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, a first-time honor for the Fayetteville native who already has been named SEC Diver of the Week five times this season, the most in school history.

She is the first Razorback to win freshman of the week honors since Madison Stratham earned it four times during the 2015-2016 season.

Schultz won the 1-meter and 3-meter titles against No. 7 Tennessee last weekend with scores of 344.78 and 344.18, respectively. She has 15 first-place showings out of 18 six-dive efforts this year and has not finished outside the top three.

Arkansas' Igbokwe earns SEC award

Arkansas Razorbacks All-American sprinter Obi Igbokwe was named the SEC co-Runner of the Week on Tuesday.

Igbokwe won the 200-meter dash with a personal best of 20.78 seconds at the Arkansas Invitational. The time ranks him as the top 200 sprinter in the NCAA and third in the world.

Ozarks runner wins ASC award

University of the Ozarks senior sprinter Jacob Williams was named the American Southwest Conference men's Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.

Williams set a school record in the 60-meter dash, posting a time of 7.21 seconds while finishing eighth at the Missouri Southern Invite in Joplin, Mo., on Saturday.

UALR hires new coach

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock announced the hiring of Mark Foster as its new women's soccer coach Tuesday.

Foster comes to UALR after spending the past season as an assistant at Sun Belt Conference rival South Alabama. In 2017, Foster helped lead the Jaguars to both the Sun Belt regular-season and tournament titles as South Alabama finished 14-6-1 overall and 9-1-0 in conference play, advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

Foster also was the head coach at Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville, Tenn., for four seasons where his teams went 40-27-8.

BASKETBALL

Haynes Earns conference honor

University of Arkansas at Fort Smith sophomore guard Micayla Haynes was named Heartland Conference women's basketball co-Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Haynes scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds in leading the Lady Lions to their road victory against St. Edward's. She shot 7 of 11 from the floor, including 2 of 3 on three-pointers, and was 8 of 8 on the foul line. She also had five assists and four steals.

HIGH SCHOOL

Fayetteville's Warner receives Gatorade award

Fayetteville's Haley Warner was named Gatorade Arkansas Volleyball Player of the Year on Tuesday.

Warner, a 6-2 senior, led the Bulldogs to a 27-11 record and a fourth consecutive Class 7A state championship. She had 669 kills, 232 digs, 211 assists, 82 blocks and 29 aces, and she was named MVP of the state tournament.

She received a scholarship to play volleyball at Florida.
