Lee Elementary

United Bank presented 500 sets of hats and gloves to the children at Lee Elementary School in Springdale on Dec. 19.

The employees at United Bank were looking for ways to make a difference in their community and reached out to Lee Elementary in early November to see what they could do to help the students at the school for the holidays. After some discussion between the principal of the school and the United Bank employees, it was decided that providing a new set of hats and gloves for all of the students at the school would be the most beneficial.

Lee Elementary has approximately 490 students and the bank employees were able to pull together 500 sets of gloves and hats to send home with the students before they left for their holiday break.

Dental services

A $30,295 grant from the Blue and You Foundation will help dental hygiene students at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith provide preventive dental services to children in low-income families in the Fort Smith area.

The grant will fund the “After School Smilz” program in the College of Health Sciences at UAFS, through which dental hygiene students will provide dental care to at-risk children in the area who lack access to dental care.

The selected target elementary schools located in Fort Smith are Albert Pike, Howard, Trusty, Tilles and Spradling. Preventive services provided will include a dental cleaning, radiographs, oral hygiene education, fluoride treatment, and examination by a dentist and sealants if indicated. Students that require urgent care will be aided in finding a dental facility for treatment. The funds will subsidize dental supplies, while the students and faculty members are volunteering their time for the program.

The UAFS Foundation was one of 40 organizations to receive a grant from the organization, which granted a total of $2.3 million to health initiatives across the state.
