An additional 21 flu-related deaths were reported to the state last week, bringing the total death toll from this year’s flu season to 70, the Arkansas Department of Health reported Wednesday.

All the deaths reported last week were of adults, primarily people 65 and older, according to the Health Department. The deaths that have been previously reported include one child between the ages of 5 and 18.

Flu season typically starts in the fall and peaks in January or February. This season started earlier than usual, with emergency room and doctor visits increasing significantly in December.
