Ethics panel socks state Democratic Party, 2 candidates

In a settlement of an ethics complaint, the state Democratic Party has agreed to pay a $100 fine and be sanctioned with a public letter of caution from the Arkansas Ethics Commission.

The state Democratic Party agreed that the party was required to file a reporting form for the first quarter of this year on April 16 with the secretary of state's office.

But the party filed the report May 18, and that was 32 days late, Ethics Commission Director Graham Sloan said in a letter dated Thursday to state Democratic Party Chairman Michael John Gray.

Sarah Jo Reynolds, executive director of the state Republican Party, filed the complaint against the Democrats.

In a separate settlement of an ethics complaint, Sebastian County treasurer/collector candidate Steve Hotz agreed to pay a $100 fine and to be sanctioned by the commission with a public letter of caution, Sloan said Thursday in a letter to Hotz.

He said Hotz agreed with the commission finding that he failed to file a Statement of Financial Interest for 2017.

Hempstead County Clerk candidate Eva Morehead agreed to be sanctioned with a public letter of caution from the Ethics Commission in a settlement of a complaint against her.

Morehead agreed with the commission's finding that she violated state law by failing to timely file a Statement of Financial Interest for 2017, Sloan said in a letter dated Thursday to Morehead.
