Little Rock Fire Department investigates pair of 'suspicious' blazes

The Little Rock Fire Department responded Wednesday night to two separate structure fires that a spokesman said were "suspicious in nature."

Capt. Jacob Lear-Sadowsky said the blazes were still under investigation, and it was too soon to classify them as arson.

The first fire was reported just before 10:15 p.m. at a home on 10th and Barber streets. The fire was quickly extinguished, and the structure could possibly be saved, Lear-Sadowsky said.

While firefighters were on the scene, another fire was reported at a residence a few blocks away. A different crew responded at 10:25 p.m. to a blaze on 8th and Byrd streets.

That fire had progressed throughout the house, and it is considered a total loss, Lear-Sadowsky said.

The captain added that a firefighter suffered a minor ankle injury after falling on some stairs. He was treated at the scene and was able to return to the station.

Both homes appeared to be vacant, and no one else was reported injured, he said.
