Maximum-risk inmate escapes from county courthouse, agency says

A maximum-risk inmate escaped from a courthouse in Arkansas Wednesday, authorities said.

Christopher Potts, 23, was not in the custody of the Arkansas Department of Correction at the time of his escape from the Hot Spring County Courthouse, agency spokesman Solomon Graves said Wednesday.

Potts was in the custody of the Hot Spring County sheriff’s office, Graves said, until a spot at a state corrections facility became available.

Graves said the department is lending a hand in the search for Potts and has sent dogs from the Quachita River Unit to help locate the convicted thief.

At the time of his escape, Potts was serving a five-year sentence for burglary of a commercial business, Arkansas Department of Correction records indicate. Potts had been convicted four times before of residential burglary, theft of property and commercial burglary.

The DOC website listed Potts as a maximum-risk inmate at the time of his last prison term.

Representatives of the Hot Spring County sheriff’s office were unavailable for immediate comment.
