Head-on collisions in state kill 3 people, injure 2 others

Three people were killed in crashes on state roadways Friday, according to Arkansas State Police.

Two drivers from south Arkansas died in a head-on crash in Miller County, state police said.

According to a preliminary crash report, 29-year-old Laderick D. Franklin was driving east on U.S. 82 east of Texarkana when his 2012 Jeep Compass crossed the highway's centerline shortly before 12:30 a.m. and struck a westbound 1996 Chevrolet S-10 head-on.

Franklin and the pickup's driver -- 39-year-old Louie Scott Holmes of El Dorado -- were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by the Miller County coroner, authorities said.

The report did not say what caused Franklin, a Texarkana resident, to cross into the westbound lanes.

A Hot Springs man was killed and two other people were hurt in a head-on collision early Friday near Hot Springs, state police said.

According to a preliminary crash report, 52-year-old Roger Alred of Hot Springs was driving north in the 500 block of Fox Pass Cutoff when he crossed the road's centerline around 5:40 a.m. His 2002 Chevrolet hit a southbound 1996 Chrysler head-on, the report said.

The collision killed the Chrysler's driver, 48-year-old Steven Reed of Hot Springs, and injured a passenger in the car, 46-year-old Tracey Steele of Mountain Pine, authorities said. Alred was also listed as hurt. The report did not detail the extent of their injuries.

State police said the weather was clear and the roads were dry at the time of both crashes.
