Police identify man who was fatally struck by tractor-trailer while crossing Arkansas street

JUNE 25 UPDATE:

Authorities have identified the pedestrian who died June 15 after being hit by an 18-wheeler while trying to cross a northeast Arkansas street.

George Jones, 59, was walking south on Jonesboro's Drake Street at 9:30 p.m. when he tried to cross Johnson Avenue, according to a report from the city's Police Department. The Jonesboro man was struck in the intersection by a 2006 Freightliner traveling east, the report states.

Officers reportedly pronounced him dead at the scene, adding that he smelled strongly of intoxicants.

Cpl. David McDaniel, a spokesman for the Police Department, said authorities tried to wait to release the pedestrian's name until his family had been notified. Officers had not been able to contact a relative as of Monday.

Blood was drawn from the tractor-trailer's 51-year-old driver, and toxicology results were said to be pending.

Road conditions were described as clear and dry, although the police report states the area was not well-lit.

At least 217 people have died in wrecks on Arkansas roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
