1:30 P.M. UPDATE:

Authorities have identified a man who was fatally shot by police early Friday in Russellville.

Arkansas State Police said Joshua Cartwright, 36, of Russellville was killed by police after Cartwright emerged from an apartment brandishing a gun.

The Russellville Police Department said earlier in the day that Cartwright shot toward officers.

EARLIER:

A man who had barricaded himself in an apartment south of Arkansas Tech University's campus later emerged and shot at officers before authorities killed him, police said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, died at the scene after being shot early Friday.

The Russellville Police Department said in a statement that officers were first called at 6:45 p.m. Thursday to investigate a report that a man wanted on felony warrants shot at bail bondsmen who were trying to take him into custody in the 600 block of west K Street. No further information about the warrants was included.

The man at one point barricaded himself inside an apartment and later fired once more when police arrived, the statement noted.

Authorities said they evacuated the area and negotiated with the gunman for hours.

"At approximately 2:15 a.m., the suspect exited the apartment and began firing at officers, who then engaged the suspect," police wrote, noting Arkansas State Police troopers are investigating the officer-involved shooting.

There was no indication in the statement that anyone was hit by the gunman's shots.
