GOLF: UA'S Taylor, Fassi honored by SEC; UCA's George named Southland Conference Player of the Year

UA'S Taylor, Fassi honored by SEC

University of Arkansas, Fayetteville women's golf coach Shauna Taylor and junior Maria Fassi have been named SEC Coach of the Year and SEC Player of the Year, the league office announced Thursday.

Taylor, in her 11th season with the Razorbacks, led Arkansas to its first SEC championship in Hoover, Ala., two weeks ago. This marks the second time in five seasons Taylor has been selected as conference coach of the year.

Fassi joined former Razorbacks All-American Stacy Lewis as the only other player in program history to win the award. She also earned her third All-SEC honor with a first-team selection this season. Junior Dylan Kim and senior Alana Uriell joined Fassi among the first-team All-SEC selections.

Kim also was named SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Last week, No. 3 Arkansas earned the No. 1 seed in the Austin, Texas, NCAA Regional. Play begins Monday with the top six teams from the four regional sites advancing to the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla., May 18-23.

UCA's George, Rivas honored

University of Central Arkansas junior Lewis George was named the Southland Conference's Player of the Year on Thursday.

Senior teammate Rodrigo Rivas was named to the conference's second team.

George was the medalist at the Southland championship, shooting a 216 to lead the Bears to a fourth-place finish overall. He will compete in the NCAA College Station Regional on May 14-16. George led the Bears in scoring average this season at 72.4 strokes (32 rounds), with a low round of 65 and low tournament of 204. He was a two-time medalist and had two other runnerup finishes and six Top 10 finishes.

Rivas finished tied for fifth place at the Southland championship with a 223. He finished second to George in season scoring average for UCA at 74.7 strokes per round over 29 rounds. He had a low round of 70 and a low tournament of 223 twice.
