Run-ruled after seven innings, the University of Central Arkansas baseball team was sent to the losers bracket Wednesday in a loss to Houston Baptist in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas. No. 5-seeded UCA (32-24) fell behind 4-0 in the first inning, and the Bears didn’t record a run against No. 4-seeded Houston Baptist (27-28) until the sixth inning, when junior right fielder Coby Potvin hit a two-run single to come within 8-2. Houston Baptist junior first baseman Grant Buck went 3 for 3 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI, and senior second baseman Jack Fitzgerald hit a three-run home run in the fifth that gave the Huskies an 8-0 lead. UCA senior right-hander Tyler Gray (6-2, 3.33 ERA) earned the loss, pitching 5 innings with 7 hits, 6 earned runs, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. Houston Baptist senior right-hander Matthew McCollough (9-3, 2.97) earned the complete-game victory, with 7 innings, 7 hits, 2 earned runs, no walks and 4 strikeouts. The Bears run ruled Houston Baptist in the first game of last season’s Southland tournament, and Sam Houston State run ruled UCA in the 2016 tournament. UCA will play top-seeded Sam Houston State, which lost 4-3 to No. 8 New Orleans, in an elimination game at noon today.

Lightning prevented the University 0f Arkansas-Little Rock from completing its game with Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday night in Lafayette, La. The Ragin’ Cajuns scored once and were still batting in the bottom of the fourth inning when the game was suspended until 8:30 this morning.
