LITTLE ROCK — Federal officials say an Arkansas man has been indicted on assault and firearm charges after being accused of climbing over a post office counter and firing multiple shots in the direction of an employee.

U.S. Attorney Cody Hiland said Wednesday that Stephen Gregory Potts of Conway was charged with one count of assaulting a Postal Service employee and two federal firearms counts.

Authorities said Potts initially appeared to be filling out a mailing label at the post office in Conway on Saturday. After employees stopped him from walking through a workroom door, he pulled out a gun, climbed over the counter and fired five or six shots, barely missing a supervisor, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney's office.

Potts is in federal custody, and court records state he does not yet have an attorney who can speak for him.
