An 80-year-old woman died hours after she was involved in a two-vehicle crash Monday evening in Jonesboro, authorities said.
Bettie Brashears of Lepanto was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt south on Southwest Drive shortly after 5 p.m. when she failed to yield to a northbound 2006 Toyota 4-Runner at the intersection with Christian Valley Drive, according to a state police report
Brashears' car collided with the SUV driven by 23-year-old Joshua Franklin Stone, a Jonesboro Police Department report said.
Officer Casey Moore said Brashears was conscious, alert and talking with emergency personnel when he arrived at the scene. Police said they learned later that Brashears died about 9:45 p.m. at a hospital.
Conditions were clear and dry at the time of the crash, according to the state police report.
A child also died Monday, two days after the car he was riding in hydroplaned on a wet highway and collided head-on with another vehicle.
The crash happened about 2:20 p.m. Saturday on Arkansas 124 in Russellville, according to an Arkansas State Police report.
Troopers wrote that the boy, who was not named, was riding in a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze traveling south. The car began to hydroplane and spun several times before hitting a northbound 2014 Chevrolet Camaro head-on, the report said.
The boy was taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, where he died Monday, the report said.
No other injuries were reported.
Police said rain was falling at the time of the wreck.
At least 391 people have died in crashes on Arkansas roads this year, according to preliminary figures.
