Blytheville forfeits two victories

Blytheville will forfeit two victories after using an ineligible player in four games this season, the Arkansas Activities Association announced Monday.

The Chickasaws used the player in two victories -- Aug. 31 against Osceola and Sept. 28 in a 5A-East Conference game at Nettleton. They also used the player Sept. 7 against West Memphis and Sept. 14 against Marion.

With the forfeits, Blytheville is now 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the 5A-East. The Chickasaws were in a first-place tie with Nettleton at 4-1 in the 5A-East before the forfeits. Nettleton's record is now 8-0 overall and 5-0 in conference.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

OBU ranks second in regional rankings

Ouachita Baptist University is the top Great American Conference school in the NCAA Division II's Super Region 3 rankings.

The Tigers are 8-0 and ranked second behind Ferris State (7-0). Southern Arkansas University (7-1) is sixth and Harding University (6-2) is ranked eighth.

Grand Valley State (5-1), Northwest Missouri State (7-1) and Indianapolis (6-1) are ranked third through fifth. Fort Hays State (6-2) is ranked seventh.

The top seven teams in the Super Region 3 rankings at the end of the regular season qualify for the NCAA Division II playoffs. The top-ranked team in the region receives a first-round bye.

GAC announces players of the week

Cole Sears of the University of Arkansas at Monticello and Kris Oliver of Ouachita Baptist University were named co-offensive players of the week by the Great American Conference on Monday. Henderson State University's Jake Chatman and Temo Martinez were named defensive player of the week and special teams players of the week, respectively.

Sears threw for 412 yards and four touchdowns in the Boll Weevils' 45-37 victory over Oklahoma Baptist. Oliver rushed for 151 yards in a 41-0 victory over Southern Nazarene to become the conference's all-time leading rusher with 3,493 yards.

Chatman intercepted two passes and had 2.5 tackles for loss. Martinez made a 49-yard field goal, and a 40-yard attempt with five seconds left to give the Reddies a 20-17 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Lyon kicker earns honor

Lyon College kicker Ignacio Gomez was named special-teams player of the week in the Sooner Athletic Conference on Monday.

Gomez made two field goals and an extra point in the Scots' 48-21 loss to Langston on Saturday. Gomez had field goals of 23 and 39 yards, and a 53-yard punt.

Arkansas' Valle gets SEC recognition

Okiana Valle of the University of Arkansas was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Valle had 53 combined digs in a victory over South Carolina on Wednesday and a loss to Alabama on Sunday.

She also had three aces against South Carolina.

Arkansas second in suspended tournament

The University of Arkansas is in second place at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Carrollton, Texas, as play was suspended due to darkness with three holes left in the second round.

The second round will resume at 8:30 a.m. today, with the third round to follow.

The Razorbacks were 1-over par through 33 holes when play was halted after shooting a 281 in the first round. Oklahoma State was 12-under par at the time play was stopped. The Cowboys shot a 275 in the first round. North Carolina State is two shots back of the Razorbacks.

Individually, William Buhl is tied for fourth at 2-under. Mason Overstreet, who was leading after the first round, is in sixth place at even par.

ASU fourth in Little Rock

Arkansas State University was in fourth place when play was suspended due to darkness at the Little Rock Invitational at Chenal Country Club in Little Rock.

The Red Wolves shot a 298 in the first round, and had completed 15 holes of the second round before play was suspended. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock was in sixth place. The University of Central Arkansas was in 14th place.

The second round will restart at 7:45 a.m., with the third round set for 9:30 a.m.

WOMEN'S GOLF

ASU leads in Texas

Arkansas State University leads after the first two rounds of the UT-Arlington Invitational in Mansfield, Texas.

The Red Wolves shot a 595 (301-294) and leads South Alabama by two strokes. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is fifth at 624 (319-305).

Individually, Arkansas State's Olivia Schmidt (74-72) shares the lead with Southern Utah's Chanikan Yongyuan with a 4-over 146. Grayson Gladden is tied for eighth at 149 (73-76), and Aracelly Jimenez-Rios is tied for 10th at (76-74) with UALR's Emelie Blennow (79-71) at 150.
