Pea Ridge

Blackhawks to test 4-0 Wolves

Undefeated Lincoln (4-0, 1-0) will face its biggest test of the season Friday with a 4A-1 Conference game at Pea Ridge. Lincoln is 4-0 for the first time since 2013, when the Wolves went 11-2 and advanced to the third round of the playoffs.

The Wolves this year are led by senior quarterback Caleb Lloyd and two running backs, Christian Sellers and Christian Crittenden, who each rushed for more than 100 yards in a 48-20 victory over Subiaco Academy.

Chance Blankenship recovered a fumble in the end zone last week during Lincoln’s 19-7 victory over Gravette to begin conference play.

“The thing that jumps out at you on film is how bigger and more athletic (Lincoln) appears to be this year,” Pea Ridge coach Stephen Neal said. “Their quarterback is shifty, and he throws a good ball. They’re a good team. We’ve got our work cut out for us.”

Pea Ridge (2-2, 1-0) has rebounded with consecutive victories after opening the season with losses to Harrison and Maumelle. Pea Ridge beat Gentry 27-7 after blasting Class 5A Farmington 42-0 the previous week.

“Our first two games, we had 10 turnovers and only one takeaway,” Neal said. “So, we’re doing a much better job of protecting the football. That’s the big difference. We only had one fumble on 54 carries last week in the rain.”

ALMA

Airedales gain momentum for Farmington

The start of conference play proved beneficial to Alma and Farmington, which were shut out the previous week.

Alma opened 5A-West action with a 34-16 victory over Vilonia while Farmington won 38-13 at Clarksville. The win was the first of the year for Alma (1-3, 1-0), which faced 7A Springdale and Van Buren and 6A Russellville in nonconference action.

“Playing those schools the first three weeks got us physically and mentally ready for conference,” Alma coach Doug Loughridge said. “We reminded our kids conference play is the start of a new season and that everyone is 0-0.”

Alma will travel Friday to Farmington (3-1, 1-0), which lost 42-0 to Pea Ridge two weeks ago after opening the season with wins over Prairie Grove and Gravette. The Cardinals rebounded at Clarksville, where Reid Turner scored on touchdown runs of 73 and 60 yards. Both Farmington and Alma put their ground games to use on a rainy night last Friday.

Alma rushed for nearly 250 yards with Keegan Rosebeary leading the way with 92 yards on 14 carries. Rosebeary also caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Landon Blair.

“We knew it was going to rain, and we shortened the playbook,” Loughridge said. “With Farmington, we know (Reid) is very good. They’re physical. They’re going to do a good job of running the football, and they tackle really well on defense.”

Springdale High

Bulldogs finally healthy at midway point

Springdale heads into its biggest game of the season healthy and hitting on all cylinders, coach Zak Clark said.

“We’re as healthy as we have been at this juncture in the season,” said Clark, who is in his fourth season at Springdale. “We’re going to be without Jacob Sisomphou for two to three weeks, and he’s a three-year starter. But we should get our right tackle Angel Ortega back this week, and getting Connor Sikes back helps.”

Springdale (4-0, 1-0 7A-West) travels to Bentonville West this week. The Wolverines are also 1-0 in conference play after knocking off Fayetteville 31-28 last week.

“They have so many playmakers on offense,” Clark said of West. “They are the only team that I am aware of that has two SEC players. Offensively they have a lot of weapons, and on defense they don’t give up a lot of explosive plays.”

Last week Springdale throttled Rogers Heritage 50-28 after falling behind 14-0 before the offense ever took a snap.

Senior quarterback Grant Allen led the team on a 36-point barrage, and the Bulldogs won going away as Allen was almost perfect in the passing department and fired three scoring passes.

“I think he’s getting more comfortable in the offense every week,” Clark said. “Each week we’ve trusted him more, and we really like the way he is spreading it around.”

Allen is 62-of-89 for 1,096 yards and 12 touchdowns with just one interception. Seven different players have caught passes with senior Brock Pounders leading the way with 22 catches for 461 yards and four touchdowns.

Shiloh Christian

Saints flying under the 4A radar

It’s been eight seasons since Shiloh Christian last hoisted a state championship trophy. The Saints made a semifinals run in 2016, but last season they made a hasty playoff exit.

Coming into this season, the Saints were pegged for a third-place finish in the 4A-1 behind Prairie Grove and Pea Ridge, but the Saints (3-1, 1-0) are looking like a title contender at the midway point of the season.

Shiloh Christian travels to Green Forest on Friday after blowing out Berryville in the league opener last week.

“I like the way we’ve played, but there are a lot of things we need to get better at,” Saints coach Jeff Conaway said.

The Saints have been lighting up the scoreboard offensively, using a two-quarterback system with junior Eli Reece and sophomore Jaiden Henry. The two have combined to go 55-of-94 for 885 yards and nine touchdowns.

“Eli has played well and has played consistent,” Conaway said, “and Jaiden Henry has helped us at a couple of positions. Anytime you can have a sophomore that can give you explosive plays and play at a high level is a plus.”

Shiloh Christian has played exceptional defense in its three-game win streak, allowing just 28 points with one shutout. Senior defensive end Jack Lotspeich has 4.0 sacks and 5.0 tackles for loss.

“They have played great,” Conaway said of his defense. “They have been really, really strong. We’re making a lot of plays, forcing turnovers, getting picks. We’re playing very aggressive.”

Harrison

Goblins must avoid ‘trap games’

Harrison hasn’t played a home game since Aug. 31, so it’s fitting that this is homecoming week as the Goblins (4-0, 1-0 5A-West Conference) play Clarksville.

Coach Joel Wells, however, has warned his team to remain focused on what they need to do on the field.

“We play our next two games at home, and these can’t be trap games,” Wells said. “If we want to win a conference title and play a home playoff game, then we have to win these at home because they are followed by trips to Alma and Greenbrier. That’s the message to our kids this week.”

Harrison, which opened 5A-West play with a 21-9 win at Morrilton, now must turn its attention to Clarksville and its single-wing offense. Wells said the key to stopping the Panthers will be how well his players stick to their assignments.

“It’s a difficult offense to prepare for,” Wells said. “We had a good game against it last year, and our plan is going to be similar to what we did last year.

“Our players can’t take the cheese because they will have players going all directions. We must be disciplined and play well if we are going to stop them.”

Greenwood

Bulldogs ready for big game, long trip

Greenwood coach Rick Jones acknowledges his team’s 5A-West conference game at El Dorado is a big one, but he downplays the distance the Bulldogs will have to travel.

“We’ll get on a bus and drive four and a half hours to go play football,” Jones said. “It’s not about the trip, it’s about what happens a 7 o’clock. Honestly, I think the more you make of it, the bigger it is.”

The team chartered buses two years ago for the trip but will ride on regular school buses this time, Jones said.

The long trip aside, El Dorado (2-2, 1-0) presents plenty of a challenge, Jones said. He compared them to a Fort Smith Northside team, which handed Greenwood its lone loss to this point.

“Northside is the most comparable, especially defensively because they’re physical up front with some speed on the back end,” Jones said. “They’ve got a quarterback that can run it and throw it, and they have three massive offensive linemen.

“They’ve played good people, too. They’re not afraid at all.”

The Bulldogs (3-1, 1-0) have bounced back strong from an opening-game loss to Fort Smith Northside, outscoring three opponents by a combined score of 142-46.

Senior quarterback Peyton Holt has racked up big numbers, throwing for 820 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s also the team’s leading rusher with 212 yards and five TDs, only a couple yards ahead of Hunter Wilkinson. The sophomore has 209 rushing yards and six total touchdowns.

“We’re just a work in progress,” Jones said. “We’ve made some strides; that’s what’s exciting. Our kids are practicing well, and I’m pleased with the way they go about their business.”

Booneville

Bearcats keep on rolling

Booneville coach Scott Hyatt said his team took full advantage of the bye week before starting 3A-1 Conference play, and it showed in the Bearcats’ 48-0 drubbing of Paris.

“We tried to use the off week to fix some things and let them get their legs back under them,” Hyatt said. “We picked right back up last Monday, and I think we played pretty good in the downpour. We didn’t have any turnovers and played a pretty good ballgame.”

The Bearcats (4-0, 1-0) are getting healthier as senior Dalton Tatum, who suffered an arm injury, should return to action next week in time for the Greenland game. Tatum plays both tight end and linebacker.

Junior Gabe Fennell and senior Ian Suttles have shown progress already this season, Hyatt said.

Suttles, a starter at cornerback, has three interceptions already this season and has returned two for touchdowns. Fennell stepped into a starting role at safety after Brandon Ulmer suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Bentonville

Tigers prepare for improved Pointers

Bentonville has won its last 10 meetings against Van Buren, dating back to the 2002 season, but coach Jody Grant said this year’s Pointers are much different than they have been in previous years.

“We’re impressed with some of the things Van Buren has done,” Grant said. “They’re putting up some points up on the scoreboard and doing some good things offensively. They’re playing with some confidence and playing some pretty clean football.”

The Tigers (1-3, 1-0) opened 7A-West Conference play last week with an impressive 44-8 victory over Springdale Har-Ber, but Grant said his team remains a group that is still trying to catch its second wind as it reaches the halfway point of the season.

“We have our work cut out for us,” Grant said. “We can’t forget that we’re a team that’s sitting at 1-3 right now, but we’re excited about the opportunity we have to go down to Van Buren. Some of the things they do will be a challenge for us, and it will be fun to see how well we can handle it.”
