Garland County jail prisoner dies

HOT SPRINGS -- A 28-year-old man died Friday while in custody at the Garland County jail, according to Garland County Sheriff Mike McCormick.

According to a news release Sunday from the sheriff's office, the inmate was brought to the jail by "another agency" and booked on criminal trespass charges at around 2 p.m. Friday.

The release did not identify the inmate or the other agency.

At around 5:17 p.m. Friday, the inmate "was found unresponsive in a holding cell in the booking area," the release stated.

"Lifesaving measures were immediately taken by on-site medical staff and LifeNet was called to the scene and continued the lifesaving efforts to no avail," Sgt. John Schroeder said in the news release.

The release noted that the coroner's office and the sheriff's office went to the scene and began a formal investigation.

The body was taken to the state Crime Laboratory to determine the cause of death, the release said. The investigation is ongoing.
