Orchids

The Orchid Society of the Ozarks will meet at 1:30 p.m. June 23 at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. The next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. July 21.

The objective of the society is to stimulate interest in orchids and their culture. Frequent presentations by renowned growers offer education and quality plants for sale. Monthly judging displays often include 30 to 40 blooming plants, while monthly raffles offer affordable orchids and supplies for new and experienced growers.

BC Dems

Benton County Dems will meet at noon June 24 at the Golden Corral, 2506 W. Pleasant Crossing Drive in Rogers. Come for lunch and conversation at 11 a.m. The guest speaker will be Rob Wells, assistant professor of the School of Journalism and Strategic Media at the University of Arkansas. He and his students will report on the student loan debt crisis.

Calico Cut-Ups

Mindy Smith, a textile/mixed media artist from Columbia, Mo., will be the speaker at the June meeting of the Calico Cut-Ups. Her fiber art has been displayed at the University of Missouri, the Denver National Quilt Festival and the Paducah Quilt Show. She regularly teaches free motion quilting and thread painting classes and lectures on the topic of creatively documenting your quilts. At the meeting, she will give a presentation titled, "Give Your Quilts A Voice." It will be a PowerPoint trunk show of quilts and the process of creating their life stories.

The meeting takes place at noon June 24 at the United Methodist Church at 20 Boyce Drive in Bella Vista. Smith's presentation will start at 1 p.m. followed by the business meeting. Guests are welcome.

Genealogists

The Northwest Arkansas Genealogical Society will meet at 6 p.m. June 24, at the Bentonville Public Library.

The Arkansas Gravestone Project is a free database dedicated to the digital archive of headstones for all of Arkansas. Theresa Lundberg, a coordinator with Arkansas and Missouri Gravestone Projects, will demonstrate the website and answer questions. Everyone is welcome.

QUILT

Quilters United In Learning Together will meet at 6:30 p.m. June 27 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2898 S. 48th St. in Springdale. The guest speaker will be Stacie Bloomfield of Gingiber. Come about 6 p.m. to check out the upcoming speakers and workshops and to learn more about the group.

There will be an embroidery workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 29 at Gingiber in Springdale with Stacie Bloomfield. Registration is required.

The Northwest Arkansas Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. June 27 at General Store on the grounds of the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, 118 W. Johnson Ave. in Springdale. Matt Mulhearn of Arkansas State Parks will be speaking about preservation work at Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park.

Myeloma

Hope Cancer Resources offers a support group for myeloma patients, caregivers and loved ones. The Northwest Arkansas Myeloma Support Group will be co-facilitated by a 22-year survivor and will provide education, support and the opportunity to share personal experiences. The group will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 3 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale.

Photographers

Get your kicks on Route 66 in a special presentation "The History of Route 66." Join Greg Disch, who will speak to the Photographic Society of Northwest Arkansas at 7 p.m. July 9 at Whole Hog Cafe in Fayetteville. Disch is the photographer for Route 66: Ghost Towns and Roadside Relics, which features about 250 of his photos. The presentation includes a slide show virtual tour of the "Mother Road." Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing at the event.

Christian Woman

The Bella Vista Christian Women's Connection will meet at 9 a.m. July 9 at the Bella Vista Community Church, 75 Lancashire Blvd. The public is invited.

The featured speaker will be Jerry Varner, travel specialist, who will speak on "Making Memories." The guest speaker is Judy Hall Mefford. Her presentation will be "Finding Your Balance."

The brunch is held the second Tuesday of each month, and an all-American breakfast is served for $10. The program is sponsored by Stonecroft Ministries.

Civil War

The Bella Vista Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. July 11 at the Bella Vista Historical Museum. This is one week later than the normal first Thursday meeting because of Independence Day.

The guest speaker will be Dale Phillips, who recently retired from National Park Service after 41 years of service. He was posted in New Orleans for many years and has developed a four-part series of talks on New Orleans in the Civil War. This first part will encompass the early Civil War where the Union captured this vital city. Phillips will cover the remaining three parts beginning in 2020.

The roundtable is open to the public and only requires an interest in the American Civil War.

Radio

The Little Switzerland Amateur Radio Club will meet at 2 p.m. July 13 in the day room at Mercy Hospital, 214 Carter St. in Berryville.

Little Switzerland Amateur Radio Club meets the second Saturday of each month, can help participants get licensed and is available to give technician, general or amateur extra class tests. The testing is at noon on the second Saturday of each month. Participants must have a reservation and a current valid amateur radio license or have an FCC registration. The test fee is $15.
