EDITORIAL: Our favorite outer space alien will be missed

Ask somebody who has never seen Star Wars if they know any of the characters, and they might be able to name Darth Vader ("the guy with the breathing problem," as Red Forman calls him). They'll probably also be able to name Chewbacca and make his signature noise/groan/complaint. It transcends languages.

Peter Mayhew, who wore the fuzzy Chewbacca suit in Star Wars, died this week. He didn't have any other famous roles as an actor, but playing Chewie made him an international star.

Mr. Mayhew was known for being exceptionally tall at 7 feet, 3 inches. Word has it George Lucas was looking for someone tall to be in his movie and came across Peter Mayhew at a casting call. When Mr. Lucas walked into the room, Peter Mayhew stood up. As the director noticed his exceptional height, he leaned over to a producer and said, "I think we've found him." What an audition!

When given the choice between playing Darth Vader and Chewbacca, Mr. Mayhew chose Chewie because he wanted to play a hero. Playing Vader would have also been the opportunity of a lifetime, but he wanted to fight for the Rebellion. And against the Empire. Our kind of guy.

Peter Mayhew eventually retired from the role for health reasons. But he, like all actors, was more than his screen role. He was a pretty spectacular human being as well. He wrote two books for younger audiences, Growing up Giant and another on anti-bullying called My Favorite Giant.

Word around cyberspace is he was fairly active on the social media site Reddit as well. He'd pop up at random times to wish people a good day, signing his comments with his real name. Imagine you're feeling down, and then you get a cheerful message from Chewbacca.

With the final Star Wars film in the new trilogy coming out this December, it feels like a favorite film series of ours is winding down. Actors that played roles we've cheered through the decades are dying, and we're saying goodbye to a beloved historical franchise.

Godspeed, Mr. Mayhew. Thanks for "punching it" all those times with Han Solo and the gang.
