Deadline nears for spay-neuter grants

May 24 is the deadline for animal shelters statewide to apply for grant funds for their spay and neuter programs, North Little Rock City Clerk-Treasurer Diane Whitbey said.

The city of North Little Rock, North Little Rock Friends of Animals and volunteers from many county and city governments in Arkansas led a campaign for the state to create a spay or neuter specialty license plate promoting spay and neuter programs for pets to help shelters and rescue programs throughout the state.

Funds from the sales are collected by the North Little Rock Friends of Animals and distributed annually to eligible shelters or rescue groups who applied for grant funds.

North Little Rock Friends of Animals is a nonprofit support and fundraising organization for the North Little Rock Animal Shelter.

Written requests for funds are required and can be emailed to dwhitbey@nlr.ar.gov along with a bio and/or mission statement and any supporting documents, including the type of work they perform (nonprofit or government agency, for example). The request must also include that funds will be used for spay or neuter education.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee and notification will be sent to all applicants, the email said.

City Council moves meeting for holiday

May's second scheduled meeting of the North Little Rock City Council has been changed to 6 p.m. May 28 because the regular date falls on the May 27 Memorial Day holiday this year.

All city government offices will be closed for the holiday.

The North Little Rock City Council regularly meets on the second and fourth Mondays of every month.

Also in city government, the North Little Rock Parks and Recreation Commission won't meet in May, a Parks Department spokesman said.

The commission's next meeting will be at 5 p.m. June 17 at the North Little Rock Community Center, 2700 Willow St. Regular meetings are on the third Monday of each month.
