Mayor starts series for video updates

Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. on Labor Day launched a new weekly video series, where he'll update residents on his latest activities and initiatives.

"Every week, you'll get to hear from me about our priorities for the week and how you can be involved," Scott said in the inaugural installment.

The two-minute clip highlighted Scott's proclamation of September as "Education Month" and continued efforts to partner with the Little Rock School District.

The mayor is asking the public to submit ideas for a name of the series to mayor@littlerock.gov. He said in the Labor Day video that he'll soon include the best five proposed names in a poll on Facebook and Twitter to determine the winner.

The videos are watchable at littlerock.gov and on the city's YouTube channel.

A fundraising event for the Huntington's Disease Society of America will be held at War Memorial Park on Oct. 5.

Huntington's disease is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain, deteriorating a person's physical and mental abilities. Proceeds from the event will go toward the association's "mission to improve the lives of everyone affected by Huntington's disease," according to a news release.

An all-day BBQ cook-off will start in the morning. A “Team Hope” walk will begin at 5 p.m. Participants may register for the walk anytime before 4 p.m.

Fight Club theme for library events

In addition to a Fight Club-inspired writing contest and movie showing, the Central Arkansas Library System's Banned Books Week events will include a soap-making workshop and a lecture from a former professional fighter, the library announced last week.

On Sept. 24, artisan soap-maker Tammy Sue Pope of Moss Mountain Farm will lead a demonstration at noon in the Dee Brown Library. Fight Club features soap-making as a source of income and a "springboard to several memorable episodes," though familiarity with the book or movie aren't required to enjoy the demonstration. The session will be followed by a screening of Fight Club at 5:30 p.m. Another demonstration will be held the same day at 6:30 p.m. in the Thompson Library at 38 Rahling Circle.

On Sept. 26, former Ultimate Fighting Championship and Bellator professional fighter Roli Delgado will appear in the Ron Robinson Theater at 100 River Market Ave. Delgado, who was featured on the eighth season of The Ultimate Fighter, will offer fighting tips in a talk and demonstration. Light refreshments will be served afterward.

All events are free and open to the public. More information can be found at cals.org.
