NEWS IN BRIEF

Urban Outfitters set

to open store in LR

Global fashion retailer Urban Outfitters is setting up shop in Little Rock at The Promenade at Chenal and is scheduled to open in summer 2021.

The store, which offers a mix of women’s and men’s apparel, footwear, beauty and wellness products, and accessories such as vinyl records and cassettes, will be the first Urban Outfitters in Arkansas.

Chris Monroe, director of leasing agent Newmark Moses Tucker Partners, called it a “natural fit” for the Promenade’s mix of retail tenants.

“This is great news,” Monroe said in a written statement, adding it underscores how the west Little Rock shopping center is a “premier destination” for shoppers from across the state. A Sephora store is scheduled to open there sometime in the spring.

Founded in 1970, Urban Outfitters grew from a small space across the street from the University of Pennsylvania into a retailer with 248 locations worldwide.

The two nearest locations are in Memphis and Tulsa, according to the retailer’s online store finder.

No details about the new store were provided in a news release. The leasing agent did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Walmart Plus makes

free-shipping offer

Walmart Inc. will offer members of its Walmart Plus subscription service free shipping on all online orders beginning Friday, the company said.

Currently, orders must total at least $35 to qualify for free next-day or two-day shipping. Only items ordered through Walmart.com qualify for the fee waiver, though. Items delivered from stores, such as groceries, are still subject to the $35 minimum.

Janey Whiteside, Walmart’s chief customer officer, said in a news release that with Christmas approaching, “it feels like a life hack is needed now more than ever.” Walmart Plus gives customers more options without having to sacrifice on cost or convenience, she said.

Walmart introduced the membership service nationwide on Sept. 15. It costs $98 a year or $12.95 a month. Though often hyped as a competitor to Amazon’s Prime membership, Whiteside has said Walmart Plus was designed solely to meet the needs of the retailer’s customers.

State index closes

with a loss of 4.96

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, closed Wednesday at 470.52, down 4.96.

“Expectations for an agreement by OPEC nations to control crude oil production led to the energy sector outperforming today as equities gained ground on reports of stimulus discussions between Congressional leaders,” said Leon Lants, managing director at Stephens Inc.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
