BASKETBALL Irving selected top rookie Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving is the NBA’s Rookie of the Year, winning the award with the same ease as he dribbled past defenders this season. Irving received 117 of 120 possible first-place votes from a nationwide media panel of 120 writers and broadcasters. Irving finished with 592 points, way ahead of Minnesota’s Ricky Rubio (170) and Denver’s Kenneth Faried (129), who was third. Faried, San Antonio’s Kawhi Leonard and New York’s Iman Shumpert received the other first-place votes.

FOOTBALL Texans sign OBU’s Supernaw Former Ouachita Baptist receiver Phillip Supernaw has signed a free agent contract with the Houston Texans. He earned second-team All-Great American Conference honors last season. A native of Katy, Texas, Supernaw was a four-year starter for the Tigers. Last season he recorded 22 receptions for 301 yards and 3 touchdowns, averaging 30.1 receiving yards per game and 13.7 yards per catch.

Jimmy Johnson is going into the College Football Hall of Fame as a head coach, but before leading Miami to a 52-9 record and the 1987 national championship, he was a pretty good player and assistant coach at Arkansas, too.
