Billy D. Young

Billy D. Young, of Roland, was born November 17, 1923 in Morrilton, Arkansas to Silas H. Young and Anna Viola King. He died peacefully at home with family at his side on December 12, 2011. Bill was a devout Christian and a member of Agape Church. Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Irene Yarbrough Young; children, Doyle and wife Jan, Stan and Dennis; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers; Dolphus, Ted, and Jack; sisters, Syble, Neatus, and Mattie. Bill was the youngest of seven children and never bemoaned his young father's tragic death, but instead worked hard milking cows, chopping cotton and harvesting vegetables to ensure the family's needs were met. Raised in Adona, Bill was soft spoken, good natured and an avid sports fan and fisherman. He most cherished childhood fishing trips with his blind Uncle Preston Turner, who was like a stand-in father. In turn Bill was his constant companion and helper. Bill was a World War II Army veteran and was stationed in the Philippines and later with the occupying forces in Japan. Later Bill served with the Arkansas National Guard. After attending Arkansas Technical College he earned a Bachelor's Degree from Hendrix College, a Master's Degree from the University of Arkansas. He began his professional career as a teacher at Connell's Point, then Bigelow High School, Lincoln High School, where he established the career guidance program. Bill was most proud of his long service with the Arkansas Rehabilitation Services, retiring in 1983. He was a kind and gentle spirit and Bill will be remembered as a staunch crusader for Christ, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. His instant willingness to help others, his inquisitive mind and loving ways will be remembered as his approach and philosophy of life. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, December 14, at the Harris Chapel with Rev. Happy Caldwell officiating. Burial will be at Liberty Cemetery by Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton.
